In Grade 8, English Literature introduces students starting off with the basic concepts of reading and writing. Students read novels, short stories, poetry, and fiction/non fiction to improve on their skills and learn how to connect to themes of texts and ideas. Students in this grade also are expected to ask questions about any stories to help with comprehension.

In Grades 9 and 10, English Literature has an even bigger range of genres where students use the supporting ideas to learn. The important topics of conflicts and themes are learned. At this levels, students also learn how language shapes influences on our society today.

In Grades 11 and 12, English Literature focus on students reading with precisement and critical thinking. Students in these levels study more of complex texts from different periods of times and other cultures. The importance of reading and writing is important as itthese skills are needed for both in and outside of school. Another key concept is how students explore how literature has a connection with real life experiences. This is important for studying as in the future, strong communication will be needed
