In Social Studies, students actually study in more ways other than using textbooks to get information. One of the main things done is exploring different time periods and learning how life was, beliefs of one another, and how their choices had shaped the world. In Humanities 8, they read stories, study the map, watch documents that are historical, and make connections with what has been learnt. They also practice communication skills by discussing ideas, writing about what you learned, and working on assigned projects which are all benefits into building the knowledge.
As you move into Social Studies 9 and 10, more of inquiry based work is done, meaning similarly to the previous year, researching information and asking questions is what’s worked on. Here is where you will often be found doing observations about interesting topics for example the revolutionary, studying political systems, and looking at large events from the colonization and how it affected people. You also learn to use evidence as supporting ideas, which is used with essays, presentations, and class discussions to help.
In the higher grades, the work becomes difficult however engaging. In the Law 12 course, you have the chances to do a mock trial and even visiting the law courts to see how everything functions in real life. In 20th Century World History 12 course, you’re educated on examining and work to understand conflicts happening globally. Next, in BC First Peoples 12, you focus on Indigenous people with their issues, experiences, and perspective views while considering truth and reconciliation and the future. Finally Psychology 12 lets you study freely on human behavior and reflect on our own opinions.
Concluding across all these courses, the subject Social Studies is about thinking with the core competencies, understanding different point of views, and having connections with ideas from the past to present. Everything you do is meant to make expectations in understanding the world better and becoming citizens who is able to make informed decisions in life forward.
